Living with bears

TRC has been seeing more bear activity in both campgrounds. A few food-storage rules keep everyone — campers and bears — safe.

These rules are enforced

Until the bear activity is declared abated, the food-storage rules below are enforced. Seasonal sites out of compliance are fined $50 for each day. Tent campers who don’t comply will be asked to leave.

Food storage rules

  1. If your site has an enclosed wood or metal structure that fully seals, food and scented items may be stored inside it whenever they aren't being eaten. Otherwise, store all food and scented items in hard-sided containers with secure lids — bring enough totes and coolers (bear-proof storage preferred) to hold all your food, including drinks, chips, snacks, etc. Remove all food waste to the secure dumpster right after meals.
  2. Limit food particles in your waste water, don't burn food waste, and wash dishes and prep surfaces promptly.
  3. No feeding wildlife. Feeding birds — including liquid feeders — or any other wildlife is not allowed
If you meet a bear

Carry a whistle at all times at TRC. If you encounter a bear, blow your whistle, make yourself as large as possible, and — with others — chase it off. If you hear a whistle and you’re able, go help your fellow campers.

Bear spray is a last resort

Each lower-campground site is provided with bear spray. Use it only as a last resort — it hangs in the air for a long time and can drift into areas where people are.
